Your mom had a stroke and needs therapy to relearn many of her skills. Her biopsy results are back, and it’s cancer. The recommended treatment plan is surgery, chemo, and radiation. Those are just two scenarios where home health care allows her to recover at home.

When you’re active in your mom’s care, you must form a strong partnership with her home health care nurse. What are the best ways to do that?

Step Back and Let the Nurse Do the Work

Don’t micromanage. The nurse is trained in home health care and knows what needs to be done and how to do it. Step back and let the nurse do the work. As tempting as it may be to offer suggestions, avoid it.

There may come times that the nurse needs your help. If your mom is particularly stubborn, the nurse may need your help. You could sit and hold your mom’s hand when she has an injection. If you’re asked to help, make sure you help out in the requested manner and don’t try to take over.

Remember the Nurse Is There to Help Your Mom

The nurse isn’t there to chat with you all day or help you out. The nurse is there for your mom. Don’t lose track of that. You can ask questions and watch and learn, but don’t get in the way or interrupt the nurse’s duties.

The nurse is also not there to help you. If you get to your mom’s house and cut yourself while preparing a meal, the nurse isn’t there to take care of your cut. You need to take care of it on your own. The nurse isn’t being paid to help you.

Ask Questions

When you have questions about why a nurse does something in a specific way, don’t be afraid to ask. While the nurse is there to help your mom, you can learn too. If you learn how to care for wounds, it’s something you could help your mom with in the future.

No question is too ridiculous to ask. You may learn something that can help you to provide better care to your mom and others years from now.

Be honest and open. If something worries you, let the nurse know. Home health care is designed to help your mom finish her recovery at home. Call our specialist to learn more and to schedule services before your mom leaves the hospital.
