Home health care is designed to help people recover from an illness or injury at home. When your parent needs to heal and would benefit from getting the treatments needed in the comfort of his or her home, it makes sense to arrange to have therapists and nurses come to their home.
With home health care, you or another caregiver don’t have to get your parent out of the house, into a car, and to an appointment on time. You don’t have to learn new skills that make you uncomfortable, such as wound care. Your parent works on regaining independence and mobility. Take a look at the services your mom or dad can get in their home.
Education from Home Health Care Providers
Nurses and dietitians can also come to the home and teach your family and your parent how to care for themselves. Diabetes care is one of the common ones. A specialist comes to the home to teach your parent about dietary needs, how to inject insulin, and how to check blood sugar levels.
Feeding Tubes
If your parent isn’t eating, a feeding tube may be required to make sure your parent doesn’t become malnourished. Feeding tubes may be inserted through the nose and the sinuses. Sometimes, a feeding tube is inserted through the abdomen and directly into the stomach. Nurses need to administer the feedings and check for infection.
IV Care
IV medications and fluids require the skill of a nurse who can insert the IV catheter, change the IV bags, and administer medications when needed. If the IV is no longer needed, the nurse can remove the IV catheter and make sure that the puncture wound stops bleeding.
Rehabilitation
Instead of traveling to a therapist’s office every day or so, your mom or dad can have a therapist come to the family home. After a stroke, therapeutic services to help build muscle strength, relearn speech skills, or learn basic tasks like using a fork and spoon are important.
Rehabilitation services cover speech, occupational, and physical therapy. Your mom or dad may need one or a combination of the three.
Wound Care
After surgery, an incision needs to be kept clean. Bandage changes are an important part of that. If your parent cannot change the bandages, you’ll need to do it.
Do you know the signs of infection? Are you comfortable checking stitches, seeing any blood, and inspecting how well it’s healing? If you lack the knowledge, skilled nurses are a better choice.
You’ll work with your mom or dad’s doctor to come up with a care plan. The doctor then refers your parent for home health care services, which is important if your parent’s insurance will cover some or all of the cost. Talk to your parent’s doctor and then call an agency to get set up.
